Kyoto Mizuai: A Resilient Tradition Preserved Through Adversity

Kyoto Mizuai indigo embodies the refined aesthetic and artisanal heritage of Kyoto. Known for its delicate blue hue, Mizuai reflects the city's elegance and attention to detail. At SEUVAS, we blend this rare indigo with strong Okayama canvas, creating garments that celebrate tradition while embracing sustainability.

The story of Kyoto Mizuai is one of resilience. In the late Meiji era, domestic indigo production declined due to the influx of cheaper synthetic dyes. During World War II, indigo cultivation was even prohibited.

To preserve their heritage, artisans smuggled indigo seeds from Kyoto to Tokushima, where cultivation continued in secret.

Mizuai production involves meticulous techniques passed down for centuries. Indigo plants are grown, harvested, and fermented over months to create the unique "sukumo" used for dyeing. This natural process, using only indigo leaves and wood ash lye, produces Mizuai's characteristically light blue.

Beyond its exquisite color, indigo dye offers antibacterial, insect-repellent, and deodorizing properties. It also strengthens fabrics, making it ideal for SEUVAS' durable, sustainable garments.

Today, Kyoto Mizuai cultivation has been revived by artisans who learned from Tokushima's indigo masters and obtained the preserved seeds. By using Kyoto Mizuai, SEUVAS celebrates Kyoto's cultural heritage and honors the artisans who risked everything to preserve this ancient tradition. Each piece dyed with this rare indigo tells a story of perseverance and commitment to Kyoto's enduring aesthetic.
